Regarding the School snow days: During school year 2006-2007 Mike Walbeck told 6-8 of the transportation employess when questioned that "Dr. Phillips would not go with his decision to close school and that she phoned two area school superintendents to see what they were doing about school closings - and then over rode his decision that school should be cancelled. So - which Mike Walbeck is lying? The one last year or the one in the Chronicle dated 2/16/08? Is this just another way for Dr. Phillips to point fingers at her loyal administrators that are fearful of making their own decisions? Talk to a Marshall School transportation employee and see if Mr. Walbeck makes sure the busses are have their daily pre-trip inspections. See if he lets the bus drivers train the students on emergency bus drills. Then decide for yourself if he really drives 45-50 miles to check roads. Does anyone remember the December Monday that Marshall did not go to school - as well as Tekonsha, Homer and Union City. It was icy M-60 and south. The roads north of M-60 were wonderful. Marshall cancelled school. Beautiful day for everyone to go shopping. But - the following day when the storm really hit - Marshall had to cancel again. I question if Mr. Walbeck gets too much farther than his own Tekonsha School district road in the morning when he makes some of his calls - via the decision of Joyce Phillips.

I remember that closing. I heard it was made so late in the morning that the district had to pay many food service and transportation employees that had already shown up for work. Some of these employees show up to start breakfast by 5:30 am and drivers arrive just around 6:00 am. How much money did it cost MPS to have people show up for work when the call was made so late in the morning? I am curious as a taxpayer - I heard 8 drivers received 2 hours show up time and approx. 10 food service received 4 hours show up time? Is this correct? This is a bad reminder of the article by Joyce Phillips last year where it sounded like she had just discovered 'diesel fuel additive' and we would no longer have to cancel school due to bus fuel jelling. Was she so unaware that MPS has been using additive for at least 17 years? You have to have a supervisor that directs all the drivers to put it in at each fuel up - the busses that did jell up were due to those specific drivers not bothering to use the additive. Poor management at the bus garage is just another of the problems plagueing MPS. Before Don Beattie retired there were not issues like there are now!
