Oaklawn buys Kempf property

Kempf Funeral home will move from its 103 East Mansion Street location of the past 29 years to five acres owner Craig K. Kempf expects to purchase from Family Bible Church on North Old US 27, he confirmed Thursday after the issue was discussed on public record at the Wednesday planning commission meeting. See page one of today's Chronicle for more on the plans by both the Kempf property buyer, Oaklawn Hospital, and Kempf.

We can always change the name of the city. We will be the Oaklawn Red Hawks as everything from Kalamazoo Street to old St Farm will be Oaklawn Hospital. We might be the first city without homes, just one big hospital. Don't mis-understand my idea, I have always had good service at Oaklawn and we are lucky enough to have a good hospital. I just think they should have built outside of the residential area. St Farm made us run water out to I-94. Nice big field to built in. Well we can build the Brace Lake homes at I-94 and keep the hospital downtown. At least we will have MORE jobs in the city and I hope good health care. It is always hard to take change.

I've said this to many people, many times, but Oaklawn can bulldoze my house if it means a better hospital in Marshall.

Jobs in town (they must be the largest employer we have left) are very important to local downtown businesses. If the hospital moved out to the highway, they would be eating and buying goods at corporate chain stores instead of the local businesses we cherish here.

I wonder how many downtown jobs can be directly attributed to Oaklawn?
